Surdo

Surdo is the Brasilian name given to the large bass drums in Samba. You will find different styles for different regions. In the Rio style of Batucada

The bottom line is Marcacao, the largest size drum, which plays on the beats of two and four (in 4/4 time)

The top line is Resposta which plays on the beats of one and three (in 4/4 time)

The middle line is Cortador (Cutting) which plays a syncopated rhythm between the other two.

Samba Batucada features three Surdo parts:-
