Rumba
Cuban Rumba is generally described as having three main 'varieties' or forms. Rumba Guaguanco, Rumba Columbia and Rumba Yambu. As with the Conga rhythm, there can be regional variations in the instrument patterns for the different forms.
Rumba Guaguanco
Rumba Guaguanco is a universally popular variety of Rumba which is recognisable by the melody of the Conga and Tumba open notes. It was developed by the slave communities of Cuba and preserves many original African drum phrases. Especially in the soloing of the higher pitched Quinto drum which is improvised throughout. The lead drummer or soloist will watch and accompany or react to moves of the dancers performing with the group.
Quinto ride and phrase patterns will be covered in our workshops and will greatly enhance the soloing capability of advaced players.

Rumba Columbia
